The Source of Gratitude
Grief and Worship Can Coexist
Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped. Job 1:20 CSB
God’s Sovereign Ownership Is the Well of Gratitude
saying: Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21 CSB
The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord; Psalm 24:1 CSB
Integrity Under Adversity Protects Gratitude
His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!” “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity? ” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said. Job 2:9–10 CSB
Practices That Keep the Well Open
Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 CSB
Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the flocks disappear from the pen and there are no herds in the stalls, yet I will celebrate in the Lord; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! The Lord my Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer and enables me to walk on mountain heights! Habakkuk 3:17–19 CSB
Gratitude Looks to the Redeemer
But I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the end he will stand on the dust. Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet I will see God in my flesh. I will see him myself; my eyes will look at him, and not as a stranger. My heart longs within me. Job 19:25–27 CSB
